60th Masters Kicks Off In Style

The airport in San Juan was the place to meet and greet many of the Masters Anglers and their wives over the past weekend. Prefishing was the norm for most of the anglers who hadn’t gotten a taste of the action during leg one of the Los Suenos Triple Crown and Pelagic Rockstar events. The buzz around baggage claim was the good numbers of sails and marlin during both of these world class tournaments.
Tuesday is the day anglers load line at CR Primo and ready their equipment for three days of fishing ahead. It is also the day when Freshmen anglers are schooled on the history of the Masters Tournament and all the anglers meet for the annual Boat Draw. 2023 welcomed five Freshmen anglers and Board Members, Dale Creamer and Pat Healey explained all of the rules created 60 years ago by John Rybovich and his dock partners. The Annual Angler Meeting went off without a hitch and the Rules Committee once again took the stage to focus on a big change for 2023. Marlin, of all species, where officially added as eligible for scores – dead boat fights at twice the scores for sailfish and boat assisted marlin earning the same score. Sailfish, as it has been for 60 years, are fought exclusively from a dead boat.
The 60th Boat Draw was a festive one with 30 anglers including three husband and wife teams. But keep in mind that the Masters is an angler event – man vs. fish and all fight times gauged with stopwatch. The faster the fight, the higher the score!
Anglers will fish the next three days. Two anglers, with two active rods per boat and no anglers will fish together more than once or on the same boat more than one day. The official Boat Draw follows.
Tight Lines, 60th International Masters Anglers! We are standing by on channel 19A.
